Here, we'll take a closer look at some areas of an electrician's work and find out what awaits them there.

What is control panel manufacturing?

Every electrician is expected to be able to build an electrical panel. This might be necessary, for example, when an electrician needs to replace a fuse box. A fuse box is a key component of any electrical system. That is why it can be found in virtually every installation and every building.

The control cabinet contains electrical and electronic assemblies used to connect and control process engineering systems, machine tools, or a building’s power supply. In its simplest form, the control cabinet is simply a junction box with terminal strips full of terminals. These connect the various systems to the power supply and provide an overview of which wiring connects to which area.

When the cabinet is closed, it is designed to prevent accidental or unintentional contact with live parts. If there are parts inside that can be touched and through which a dangerous voltage flows, the cabinet must be locked. This means that either a dedicated control cabinet key or a square or hex key must be used to open it.

While the exterior of the cabinet is usually prefabricated, certain systems require special designs that must be custom-built. The interior is installed by the electrical shop—though there are also control cabinets with a prefabricated interior that can be connected using plug-in connectors.

What are the functions of the control cabinet?

The control cabinet performs several functions at once. Compared to the components inside the vehicle, it offers:

Effective protection against the ingress of water or dust

A mounting bracket and a predefined structure for the components

In special cases, a separate air-conditioning system to prevent overheating

Protection from the Effects of Electromagnetic Fields

Protection against mechanical influences, such as unauthorized access by third parties

A control cabinet protects the surrounding area from electromagnetic emissions, prevents accidental contact with live parts, and, in certain models, also provides fire protection.

What types of control cabinets are available?

Control cabinets come in various designs. Some have windows that allow users to check the status of switches, for example. Others have an emergency stop switch to immediately cut off the power supply in case of danger.

To build the right control cabinet, several factors must be taken into account: the size, layout, and shape depend on the electrical system. Cable management, current capacity, equipment installation, and other factors also play a role. Ideally, a custom sketch should be drawn up for this purpose.

What material are control cabinets made of?

Control cabinets are often made of metal—aluminum or steel sheets. However, plastics are also available as alternatives. It is important that the cabinet can withstand heat and electricity and is fire-resistant. Once the shape, size, and material have been determined, a prefabricated control cabinet can be used. If one cannot be found, steel or aluminum sheets are processed using cutting tools—such as a laser cutter—and the parts are welded or bolted together.

Does a control cabinet need a cable management system?

A cable management system helps organize the cables—that is, distinguish them from one another and indicate which connections they establish. Pre-installed systems are available for this purpose, but an electrician can also design and install one themselves. Next come the devices needed for the cabinet: switches, circuit breakers, and measuring instruments. After the cable management system and the devices have been installed, the cabinet is completed—including doors, covers, and viewing windows.

Why is grounding important in electrical installations?

Grounding is a safety measure whose importance should not be underestimated. It protects people and equipment from electric shock. The grounding cable must establish a connection between the metal parts of the control cabinet and a grounding rod. It is important that the contact surfaces are large enough. Ideally, the grounding rod is installed underground. The grounding resistance is then measured—the values must fall within safety standards. If the resistance is too high, a different grounding point must be selected or additional rods must be used. The grounding effectiveness must be tested after installation.

What steps are involved in testing the functionality of an electrical cabinet?

The electrician must verify that the cabinet is functioning as intended—both the connected devices and the cabinet itself. The cabinet must be securely anchored and able to withstand both heat and electricity. Over time, control cabinets are subject to wear and tear due to external damage or internal malfunctions. Therefore, they must be inspected regularly, and components—or the entire control cabinet—must be replaced as needed.

How much does a control cabinet cost?

Various factors must be weighed when determining the price: Is the control cabinet delivered pre-assembled, or does it need to be built from scratch? In both cases, size and material affect the price. For pre-assembled cabinets, the type and brand also play a role—well-known brands tend to command higher prices and offer higher quality. Specifications are another factor: the more components that need to be installed and the more functions are required, the more the control cabinet will cost in the end. In addition to the cost of the control cabinet itself, there are labor costs and additional material costs for installation.

What tasks are involved in the maintenance of electrical systems?

The maintenance of electrical systems, especially in businesses, plays an important role in the work of an electrician. Companies typically rely on preventive maintenance to ensure that problems do not arise during daily operations and bring work to a standstill. At the same time, many companies do not have in-house electricians. This means they hire electricians from specialized companies, who then have to deal with the systems.

Just as it is important to inspect an electrical system to ensure that it is functioning properly and does not pose a danger to anyone, a qualified professional must be hired for this task—only such a professional has the necessary expertise to ensure the required level of safety.

What is important when it comes to the maintenance of electrical systems?

For maintenance purposes, it is crucial that electrical systems remain de-energized for the entire duration of the installation work. The longer a system remains shut down, the greater the risk that an employee will inadvertently turn it on. Therefore, disconnection from the power supply must be carried out meticulously and verified. No one is allowed to work on the system while electricians are repairing or maintaining it.

It is particularly important to check whether there are any capacitors present. If there is no automatic discharge device for them, the electrician must discharge them manually using special tools. The system must be secured to prevent it from being turned back on. Simple warning signs are not sufficient in this case.

Before beginning maintenance work, the electrician must clearly verify that the system is de-energized—including to ensure that no step-down transformers, auxiliary power supplies, or backup power systems are providing any additional voltage.

How is worker safety ensured?

Short-circuiting or grounding equipment ensures the safety of workers. The electrician must then secure any parts and assemblies that may still be live. After that, the actual electrical maintenance can begin: equipment and systems are checked to ensure they are in good working order, and, if necessary, equipment is replaced, repaired, and new wiring is installed.

A separate checklist should be prepared before maintenance work begins to ensure that nothing is forgotten or overlooked. It may be necessary to provide the customer with data and photos to confirm the maintenance. In addition, a report should be prepared that details the work performed and includes information on the repairs—including any follow-up measures still to be taken.

Working with Semiconductors in Microtechnology and Sensor Technology

As technology advances, everything is becoming faster, simpler, and smaller. That’s why it’s now common for electricians to work with microtechnology and sensors. These can be found in computers, cameras, smartphones, airbags, and hearing aids.

Despite their small size, these tiny components are incredibly powerful. Therefore, specific environmental conditions must be met when working with them—the germ-free air in what is known as a cleanroom is one such environmental condition. This places special demands on electricians, who must wear the appropriate protective clothing and proceed with great care. The manufacture of microsystems involves working with very small components and using complex machines and equipment. This process is used to conduct test series and document test results. Learn more about semiconductors >>>

The Electrician and the Production Facilities—What Are His Responsibilities?

Today's businesses rely on machinery and production equipment. These systems require electricity for power and control. This means electricians are needed to set up, operate, monitor, maintain, test, and, if necessary, repair these systems. They must also check that everything is functioning properly to ensure that the actual production work is carried out to the required quality standards.

An electrician performs a wide range of tasks in the field of production facilities that are crucial to their safe and efficient operation:

1. Installation and Commissioning

Laying Cables, Connecting Machines

Wiring and Installation of Control Cabinets

Commissioning of new systems, including safety inspections

2. Maintenance and Repair

Regular Inspection and Maintenance of Electrical Components

Replacement of wear parts (e.g., sensors, relays, actuators)

Performing measurements (e.g., insulation resistance, loop impedance)

3. Troubleshooting and Error Correction

Analysis of Error Messages on Machines or Control Systems

Locating defective components or connections

Quick resolution of outages to minimize downtime

4. Work on control systems

Working with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

Loading control programs; making minor adjustments as needed

Configuration of Frequency Converters or Sensors

Electric Mobility: A Challenge for Electricians

Electric mobility is one response to the challenge of achieving greater sustainability and environmental protection. However, it also poses a challenge in itself for electricians and creates an entirely new field of work for them. This includes the vehicles themselves—now equipped with more batteries, more gadgets, and an electric motor—as well as the charging stations. The latter form the infrastructure needed to operate electric vehicles. In addition, new requirements are emerging in the field of renewable energy: electric mobility is only a sustainable solution if the energy required for it also comes from green sources.

What is electric mobility?

The term “electric mobility” encompasses more than just electric cars and electric mopeds. What about electric buses, electric trucks, and—in the future—electric airplanes? This is creating significant battery capacities, which are associated with an incredible demand for ever-increasing amounts of energy. This demand must be met—generation capacity and distribution networks must be built out or upgraded.

The concept of e-mobility makes perfect sense when you consider where most traffic is concentrated: in cities. There, the first electric vehicles have already proven their worth, thanks in part to the charging stations that are becoming increasingly common.

How can e-mobility be implemented in practice?

E-mobility is actually very easy to implement. The vehicles have batteries that supply the energy needed to power the motor. Charging stations are used to recharge the batteries—much like old-fashioned gas stations. The downside: While filling up with gas takes only a few minutes, charging an electric car’s battery can take several hours.

For home use, special wall boxes or high-current outlets can be installed. These reduce the charging time to about five hours or less—a duration that can easily be covered overnight and therefore has virtually no impact on your schedule.

How is e-mobility evolving in businesses and at home?

Electric mobility is on the rise: ever-increasing battery capacities, lower prices, and higher performance are driving this development. Added to this are operating costs, which, as things stand today, are generally lower for electric vehicles than for gasoline and diesel vehicles.

This makes e-mobility particularly well-suited for companies whose revenue is tied to vehicle operations: delivery services, taxis, trucking companies, and car-sharing services. Companies that provide their employees with a fleet of vehicles also benefit from the opportunity to position themselves as green companies while saving costs at the same time.

For the average consumer, the math is the same: If you want to save money, go with e-mobility. The costs of energy (electricity instead of gasoline), maintenance, and tax breaks speak for themselves. On top of that, there are fewer restrictions, such as driving in city centers at certain times.

What impact does e-mobility have on electricians?

The growing demand for electric vehicles means that not only are more vehicles being built, but the infrastructure—public charging stations and private charging options—must also be further expanded. As demand rises, so does the need for electricians who are well-versed in electric vehicles and charging stations.

Electricians are in demand on three levels: They contribute to the construction of electric vehicles, install the necessary infrastructure, and drive progress by equipping vehicles and charging systems with increasingly efficient technologies. On top of that, everything that has been built and installed will eventually need to be maintained—and electricians are needed here as well.

This means that, after completing their training and continuing education, they are involved in all e-mobility projects from the very beginning: from consulting and planning to installation and subsequent maintenance and repair.

Conclusion

Electricians today already have a diverse range of responsibilities, with numerous typical tasks that are part of their daily work. This begins with the construction of control cabinets—the be-all and end-all for an electrician. These control cabinets house everything needed to connect, control, and monitor electrical installations. They also protect personnel and the surrounding area from electromagnetic emissions and accidental contact with live components.

Electricians work in companies to install and maintain electrical systems. They assess needs, design the systems, and install them to ensure safe operation. They then make sure the components are functioning properly—and if they aren’t, they repair or replace them.

Electricians also work in the fields of microtechnology and sensor technology, particularly with semiconductors. In companies, they are also entrusted with installing or maintaining entire production facilities—in close collaboration with manufacturers and companies. Finally, electricians are increasingly in demand in the field of electric mobility: in the development and production of the vehicles themselves, as well as in the installation of infrastructure in the form of various charging stations.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Duties and Responsibilities of an Electrician

What is a control cabinet, and why is it so important?

A control cabinet is a unit that houses electrical and electronic assemblies for connecting and controlling process equipment, machine tools, or a building’s power supply.
