The various fusion welding methods are: butt joint, T-joint, and lap joint.

What is gas fusion welding?

Gas fusion welding, also known as oxy-acetylene welding, is used less frequently these days. This is because it is relatively slow compared to other welding processes. It uses an autogenous welding torch with a welding wire and an acetylene-oxygen mixture to produce a flame with a temperature of up to 3200 °C. This method is used to join thin sheets and non-ferrous metals in heating, piping, and installation work. It is also used for build-up welding to create a coating.

What are the advantages of oxy-fuel welding?

The advantages of oxy-fuel welding stem from the simplicity of the process. Proper use of the equipment is not very difficult, making this welding method suitable for a wide range of potential users.

In addition, the required energy is readily available. The gases can be supplied in cylinders, and the heat generated by the flames can be easily regulated during the work. At the same time, the flame effectively shields the weld joint.

No separate power supply is required, and overall, the equipment and the gas needed are relatively inexpensive. In principle, you only need two cylinders—one contains acetylene gas and the other contains oxygen. As a result, the upfront costs for this process are very low. This, combined with its wide availability, makes the process attractive for construction sites and repair work as well.

How is gas-metal arc welding used?

The process is versatile. It can be used with or without filler material. It can be used to join unalloyed and low-alloy steels. The welding process is easy to monitor, ensuring the quality of the work.

The flame provides the heat, which melts the base material and any filler material used. For structures made of thin sheet metal, the effort required is minimal and the work can be completed relatively quickly. In pipeline construction, this method is well-suited for bridging gaps, and it makes welding pipes with diameters of up to 150 mm a particularly cost-effective option.

The flame can also be used to bend pipes. It can also be used to create flared ends on pipes. Pipes can be straightened with the flame, and soldered joints can be made.

For repair work, gas welding makes it possible to achieve good results even when the weld path is difficult. This sometimes makes it possible to avoid extensive weld preparation.

What are the applications of gas fusion welding?

Repair and Maintenance Work: The gas fusion welding process is often used for machinery and vehicles, as well as for pipeline maintenance, because it is flexible and can be performed anywhere.

Pipeline Construction: Welding of pipes, particularly for gas, water, or heating lines.

Metalworking: Welding of thin sheets or thin metal parts, as it allows for good control of the heat source.

Construction of Steel Structures: Steel construction, particularly when welding steel beams or steel structures.

Cutting and Oxy-fuel Cutting: Oxy-fuel cutting of metals, particularly in metalworking and fabrication.

More About Welding

Additional information on related topics:

Welding – Applications

Temporary Employment of Welders

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Gas Fusion Welding

What is the difference between gas fusion welding and oxy-fuel welding?

Gas fusion welding and oxy-acetylene welding refer to the same process.
